Today was the start of the Saint Xavier/Trinity Crossover, with the Trolls hosting three of today's matches. Although the Trinity women's volleyball team put up a fight, it wasn't enough to come out victorious today.
In their first match, the Trolls faced Mount Mercy. Before facing Trinity, the Mustangs played Indiana-Kokomo, losing in three sets. Mount Mercy hopped right back on the court following that game as they faced Trinity.
Each set between the Trolls and the Cougars was extremely close, but it ultimately led to a win for the Mustangs.
Sarah Kiwan and Anna Maatman led the way for Trinity, both registering double-doubles on the match. Kiwan finished with 16 kills and 11 digs while Maatman ended with 12 kills and 21 digs. Dani Van Laten also put up 40 assists and 15 digs while Brianna Figueroa earned 43 digs.
Even with the Trolls putting up these numbers, they fell to Mount Mercy 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 21-25 and 16-18.
Following the matchup against the Mustangs, Trinity hit the court again to face a tough Indiana-Kokomo. Again, the Trolls would find themselves in the lead during several sets, but it wasn't enough to walk away with the match.
Britta Heggeland shined for the Trolls during this match, hitting .389 (8 kills, 1 error, 18 attempts) for four sets while also registering six blocks. Kiwan finished with another double-double, putting gup 14 kills and 12 digs.
At the end of the match, IU-Kokomo came out on top, beating the Trolls 25-14, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-20.
On Aug. 31, the Trolls will be back in action for the second and final day of the tournament. They will face Marian at 10 a.m. and Cornerstone at 2 p.m.
