The Trinity women's soccer team competed in a NAIA Opening Round match today hosted by the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats. The first match was played between the Trolls and the Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies, with the winner moving on to play the Wildcats tomorrow. Although Trinity kept possession for a great deal of the game, the Grizzlies scored in double overtime to defeat the Trinity.
In the first half, only one player was able to score, and they were on the Grizzlies' team. But once the Trolls had the opportunity for a penalty kick in the second half, it changed the game. Sophomore Selah Hopkins put the Trolls on the board, evening out the score in the 55th minute.
Then, in the 77th minute, sophomore Sara Shea recorded a goal of her own off an assist from sophomore Brianna Uhl to give the Trolls a 2-1 lead. But with less than 10 minutes left in the half, the Grizzlies scored another goal to even out the game and cause it to go into overtime. Georgia Gwinnett was able to score first, giving them the win in the 105th minute.
The match was even between the two teams, with the Trolls putting up 24 shots with 14 on goal while the Grizzlies put up 20 shots with 13 on goal. Junior Paige Rogers finished with the most shots, putting up five on the day, while senior Taylor Miller put up four of her own. Uhl also recorded four shots.
Today's game concluded the 2019 season for the women's soccer team. They finished the season with an overall record of 17-3-1 and a conference record of 12-2.
